Master of Social Work Award Announced

9th annual Outstanding MSW Field Supervisor and Civic Engagement Award

The Department of Social Work at the University of Minnesota Duluth is pleased to announce the 9th annual Outstanding MSW Field Supervisor and Civic Engagement Award. This is an award that recognizes a field supervisor who has demonstrated outstanding personal and professional civic engagement. "Civic engagement" includes providing quality supervision to students completing their field placements, encouraging students' involvement in their communities both in their fieldwork and outside of field activities. The Department seeks to recognize field supervisors who go "above and beyond" in their work with MSW students and in their communities. The recipient for 2018 is Pam Johnson, MSW, LGSW.

Pam was nominated by Micaela Carey, MSW student who completed her Field II internship at in the Minnesota Asset Building Coalition in St. Paul, MN during the 2017-2018 academic year. Pam served as the MSW field supervisor for Micaela’s field placement at the Minnesota Asset Building Coalition.  In her nomination Micaela notes, “As a supportive supervisor, Pam was consistently offering me words of encouragement and praise for any accomplishments. As an administrative supervisor, Pam even made time during a very busy legislative session to check in with my on-site supervisor and make sure things were going well.”  Additionally, “Pam demonstrates a dedication to community involvement and civic engagement. She has encouraged me to take on leadership roles confidently, as well as provided me with opportunities for engagement.”

Pam Johnson is the Policy and Advocacy Manager for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, focused on engaging Habitat supporters in advocating for the continuum of housing at the federal, state, and local levels. Pam has devoted over 30 years to anti-poverty efforts through her work with the statewide Community Action network, domestic abuse programs, youth mentoring, and nonprofit Board service. She holds Master’s Degrees in Public Policy from the University of Minnesota Humphrey School, and in Social Work from the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Pam will accept the award at the Department of Social Work Annual Fall Field Supervisor Training Luncheon on September 18, 2018 at “The Hills” (formerly Woodland Hills)  in Duluth, Minnesota.
