When:

Noon on Tuesday, October 18, 2022

Where:

UMD Recreational Sports and Outdoor Program
Rink Overlook Area in the Sports and Health Center
1216 Ordean Court, Duluth, MN

Why:

Both namesake past directors, Richard “Dick” Haney and Mick McComber, were instrumental leaders in the creation, growth, and development of RSOP. During their 45 years of leadership, they were tireless in their support of the well-being of UMD students and putting students first. Dick was the director of RSOP from 1975 to 2003. Mick was the director from 2003 to 2020 (and worked for RSOP since 1985). Both have dedicated so much of their lives to the department and furtherance of recreational opportunities for people on campus as well as in the community. The naming of these spaces is one small way to recognize their efforts.

More information:

Speakers, including Interim Chancellor David McMillan and Vice Chancellor Lisa Erwin, will begin at 12:15 pm. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

The Sports and Health Center was originally built in 1953 and called The Health and Physical Education Building. It was the second building on the current campus site. The rink was completed in 1988, and its surface alternates between ice and turf during the year, making it a multipurpose rink. Another addition to the Sports and Health Center that included a recreational gym and other amenities was completed in 2005.
