Diversity in Auxiliary Leadership

Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life Jeremy Lieferman was named a DIAL Scholar.

In Fall 2023, staff who provide programming and services for students outside the classroom received well-deserved recognition for their work to support student success and development. College and university staff from across the country were chosen for a special program to develop leadership skills by the National Association of College Auxiliary Services (NACAS).

NACAS recently unveiled its inaugural scholars program designed for personnel who come from diverse backgrounds. The program is named the Diversity in Auxiliary Leadership (DIAL) Program. One of the first members of the DIAL cohort includes UMD’s own Jeremy Leiferman, associate vice chancellor for student life.

Leiferman said he was pleased to receive the honor, “Through DIAL, I hope to learn strategies and techniques that help improve the services and the climate on our campus that impact students and other community members from diverse populations.”

The goal of the DIAL program is to provide individuals from under-represented groups with access, support, and opportunities for leadership.

Sheena Majette, NACAS chief learning officer, stressed the importance of the program. “In today’s competitive landscape, institutions must attract leaders who bring a wide variety of professional and personal experiences to the table. Through the support of the NACAS, the fully-funded scholarship program supports individuals from under-represented groups to advance in leadership positions.”

Lisa Erwin, UMD vice chancellor for student life, congratulates Leiferman. “In his first year as associate vice chancellor, Jeremy is already making his mark on UMD. His vision for supporting students is inclusive and representative of his significant experience in higher education. I’m excited he will be part of the DIAL program and look forward to what he will bring back to our campus.”
