When did you start at UMD? Why did you choose to work at UMD?
I started working at UMD this August as an assistant professor in the Department of Applied Human Sciences where I teach human anatomy and physiology and human biomechanics. I was extremely excited about the opportunity to return to the area having graduated with my master's from St. Scholastica years ago. Choosing to work at UMD not only allowed me to come back to Duluth, but it provided me the opportunity to work with highly motivated students who have a passion for the allied healthcare professions and exercise science.
What do you like most about your job?
The aspect of my job that I enjoy the most is building relationships with my students. Watching students grow their passion through the material we're learning about is extremely rewarding. It's exciting to be a part of their growth and see what great things await them in the future.
What is your research and/or teaching focus?
My teaching focus revolves around orthopedics and sports medicine. I spent the last previous years as an athletic trainer and I'm excited to bring my real-world clinical experience into the classroom.
Do you have any advice for students?
My best piece of advice for students is to be comfortable being uncomfortable. Many students get concerned about being right or wrong in a classroom, however, real life is rarely so black and white, it tends to live in the grey area. Students should remain open to new ways to learn, research and address problems. Just because your method of solving a problem isn't the same as everyone else doesn't mean that it's wrong. You are capable and you belong! And of course, don't be afraid to ask questions, chances are your peers are thinking the same thing!
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I love to travel and go to UMD sporting events with my two kids (Stella and Storm).
