Nerd Nite: Concrete is Cool! In Defense of Michael Bay! StarCraft 2: Multiplayer Meta! Mon., Feb. 13, 7 pm, Martin Library.

UMD Nerd Nite posterWhat is Nerd Nite @ UMD?

The Kathryn A. Martin Library is happy to partner with Nerd Nite Duluth to bring its absurd lecture series to our Library Rotunda on Monday, February 13, at 7 p.m. Join us for a night of learning and laughter as three distinguished scholars discuss mundane, esoteric, and fascinating topics on science and entertainment. This a free event.

What Topics Will Be Presented?

1. Concrete Is Cool
Dr. Andrea Schokker is Professor and Head of UMD’s Civil Engineering Program and is very passionate about pre-stressed concrete structures. Her presentation is entitled “Concrete Is Cool: How to tell the difference between cement and concrete and other glimpses into the amazing world of concrete…” Her description follows: “Did you know that concrete is the most used substance on earth after water? or that concrete-like materials have been used since 6500 B.C.? or that more than 50,000 people descend on Las Vegas each year for the World of Concrete event? Come find out why concrete is the coolest material on the planet.”

2. In Defense of Michael Bay
Jen Doebler is presenting “In Defense of Michael Bay.” Jen is the Associate Director of the Office for Students in Transition at UMD and is passionate about student success and Michael Bay films. Known for highly successful summer blockbuster movies, Bay is often derided within the film community, both by professionals and by armchair critics via the Internet. This presentation shows off highlights of Michael Bay's films and unravels his complex formula for winning audiences over on the silver screen. Also, explosions.

3. StarCraft 2: Multiplayer Meta: A Discussion
Hunter Pryde will bring us a look at competitive gaming in “StarCraft 2: Multi-Player Meta: A Discussion.” In the world of competitive gaming, few titles can match the balance and playability of Blizzard’s “StarCraft” series. The game has a devoted, international following, and Hunter will share its history and the strategies that power this real-time phenomenon.
