CERE's Multicultural Summit asks an important question. Listen to the discussion on February 27.

Dozens of workshops will be presented at the 2019 Summit on Equity, Diversity, and Ethnicity on Wed., Feb. 27 from 8 am – 6 pm in the Kirby Student Center and other UMD locations.

The summit, entitled "Justice and Equity for All?" raises questions about who receives justice, who is treated fairly, and who does not. Workshops offered on a variety of topics will be presented by UMD faculty, staff and students as well as other community leaders. Speakers, films, interactive sessions, and discussions will be featured.

The event sponsors are the UMD Kirby Student Center, the Campus Climate Change Teams, the Commission for Women, and Office of Diversity & Inclusion.

Keynote speaker: Janaya Khan

Known as ‘Future’ within the Black Lives Matter movement, Janaya is a black, queer, gender-nonconforming activist (pronouns: they, them, theirs), staunch Afrofuturist and social-justice educator who presents an enlightening point of view on police brutality and systemic racism.

Janaya Khan will give the keynote address at 4 pm on Wed. Feb. 27 in the Kirby Ballroom.

Janaya has been honored with several awards, including the 2015 Bromley Armstrong Humanitarian Award, and has been featured in media outlets, including the Feminist WireRaceBaitR, and The Root. Janaya currently serves as executive director of Gender Justice LA, a grassroots multi-racial coalition of transgender people and allies.

Janaya’s eye-opening presentations are underpinned by a deep commitment to social transformation. With compelling narratives, Janaya illustrates how individual lives are affected by inequality and rouses audiences to actively seek justice for all.

Art on Display

The "We All Belong" Art Show will be held in partnership with the 2019 Summit Equity, Race, & Ethnicity. The show will feature artwork from all members of the campus community. An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2019, from 3-5 pm in Griggs Center (KSC 202 - second floor of Kirby Student Center, through the Multicultural Center) with performances from members of the School of Fine Arts. The work will be on display at the 2019 Summit Equity, Race, & Ethnicity between presentations from 8am-5pm and during the noon hour on Wed. Feb 27 in Griggs Center. The event sponsors include the Chancellor's Unit Change Team, the School of Fine Arts Change Team, the Viz Lab, and the Commission on Equity, Race, & Ethnicity.
