Bulldogs are celebrating the completion of the UMD segment of the Duluth Traverse, a multi-use trail for mountain bikers, hikers, and runners that links neighborhoods throughout Duluth.
The UMD segment of the Duluth Traverse goes through the Bagley Nature Area and was completed this summer.Tim Bates, interim director of UMD’s Recreational Sports Outdoor Program (RSOP), is excited about what this trail offers students. “The Duluth Traverse links students to other parks and the rest of Duluth, providing recreational, outdoor, and fitness experiences,” he says. “It’s another opportunity for students to enjoy and embrace the place that they are living.”
In addition, RSOP and Applied Human Sciences will use the trail to expand their programmatic offerings to include more trail biking into workshops and classes.
The Duluth Traverse is a project partnership between the Cyclists of the Gitchee Gumee Shores (COGGS) and the City of Duluth. It stretches the entire ridge line of Duluth– from Lester Park in the east to Chambers Grove Park in the west, and is the first 100-mile trail system of its kind.
