More than 500 people are expected to participate in a three-day virtual event, the 2021 Summit on Equity, Race, & Ethnicity: "Being Antiracist, Doing Antiracism," from March 2–4, 2021.

Featured Presentations

A welcome and an opening talk will be presented by Tim Wise, author of nine books, including White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son and Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority. His session will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2. Wise is known as one of the most prominent anti-racist writers and educators in the United States.

On Wednesday, March 3, at 10 a.m., Dr. Ibram X. Kendi will hold a virtual conversation about the urgent issues of race, equity, and justice in America today. Kendi is one of the nation’s foremost historians and leading antiracist voices. He is the author of Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America; How to Be an Antiracist; Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You, co-authored with Jason Reynolds; Antiracist Baby; and The Black Campus Movement. His most recent book, written alongside Dr. Keisha N. Blain, is Four Hundred Souls, a choral history of African America covering 400 years in the voices of 90 writers.

This year’s virtual summit will be held over three days, with the first two days featuring guest speakers, including Wise and Kendi, along with workshops on current issues in antiracism. The third day will offer a Racial Justice Organization Fair to highlight the work being done in Duluth and Minnesota communities. The fair seeks to encourage participants to engage in concrete action.

Creativity Exhibition

The “We All Belong Creativity Exhibit” will be projected on a UMD building outdoors at UMD from 6–9 p.m., March 2–4, 2021. This all-campus art show with art, poetry, and video is focused around the summit theme: Being Antiracist, Doing Antiracism.

The exhibit is part of the CERE Summit and the Chancellor’s Unit Climate Change Team is organizing the event. 2021 is the third year the committee has presented an art show with work from students, faculty, and staff. Videos of all the 2021 work will also be available online. About the Summit

UMD has hosted a Summit on Equity, Race, & Ethnicity nearly every year since 2003. It is organized by the Commission on Equity, Race and Ethnicity (CERE), and participants include students, faculty, staff and administrators from UMD as well as community members from the Twin Ports. In order to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, this year all events will be held online.
