Next Generation Network Phase 2 Wrap-Up
The wired network upgrade is finished. The project yields many improvements and prepares us to support anticipated campus needs.
Our NGN Team has completed the wired network upgrade (also known as the distribution/edge segment) phase of the Next Generation Network (NGN) project over the summer.
To prevent and mitigate interruptions in services project required coordination with:
- Facilities Management
- Contractors, Housing
- Other partners on campus
We are thankful for all of your cooperation and assistance in this very large project.

Next Generation Network
University of Minnesota Duluth
The ITSS network team coordinated with campus partners to deliver the next phase of network improvements.
- All locations now support 1G or better wired connections
- More power to access points resulting in improved WiFi bandwidth
- Replaced old network equipment to reduce rate of failure
- 73 buildings
- 9 remote sites
- 273 closets
- 392 network switches
We are now prepared to support the anticipated needs of campus for the next 10 years.
