The German Studies program at UMD has kicked off a week of events commemorating the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with "Remembering Everyday Life in the GDR." On Monday a display of student-created Berlin Wall art was displayed in the Kirby tabling area and on Tuesday participants were invited to see and reflect on childhood memories of the former East Germany and West Germany.
On Thursday, November 7 from 5-6 pm in the Garden Room, UMD art history professor Dr. Sara Blaylock, Department of Art and Design, will present, "The Subject Who Knows: Photographers and the Photographed in the Late East Germany."
And finally on Sunday, November 10, the film "The Legend of Paul and Paula" will be presented at the newly restored West Theater (319 N Central Ave, Duluth) at 4:30 pm. This 1973 East German "tragicomedy" presents a picture of everyday life in East Berlin. The film screening will be followed by a 70s and 80s themed after-party across the street at Wussow's Concert Cafe. Participants are encouraged to come dressed for the theme! All events are free and open to the public.
