The University of Minnesota Duluth announces Kay Robinson to lead student life.

Kay Robinson, EdD, a student affairs leader with more than 23 years of experience in higher education, has been named the vice chancellor for student life (VCSL) at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD).

“I’m honored that Dr. Robinson will be joining our community as an integral member of this campus and our senior leadership team,” UMD Chancellor Charles T. Nies, PhD, said. “She brings an incredible passion and tremendous talent alongside an impressive history of leading in the student affairs space within higher education.”

Robinson has over two decades of experience in student affairs, directly working with or overseeing student involvement and culture, leadership and campus programs, in areas from enrollment management and orientation to community involvement and fraternity & sorority life. “I could not be more excited to join the UMD community this summer. Between the amazing staff and students I met during my interview, coupled with the physical beauty of Duluth and campus, I couldn’t dream a better opportunity for my family and me,“ Robinson said. “I am excited about shaping a festive, memorable, and transformative Bulldog experience for our students and staff alike.”

Robinson comes to UMD from the University of Central Oklahoma, where she had served for 17 years, most recently in the role of assistant vice president of student affairs. Previously, Robinson served as assistant director of the Ohio Union at The Ohio State University. A lifelong learner, she holds a doctorate in higher education leadership from Maryville University - St. Louis, a master’s degree in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University, and a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Robinson succeeds Jeremy Leiferman, who has been in the role of interim VCSL since Lisa Erwin’s retirement in spring 2024.

The VCSL is a key member of the university’s senior leadership team and is responsible for shaping a holistic student experience by creating and implementing strategic initiatives, building key partnerships, and leading an experienced team to advance student success and belonging.

As VCSL, Robinson will oversee 240 staff and 600 student staff, and an overall budget of $51 million (including auxiliary areas). She will play a critical role in aligning the Division of Student Life with UMD’s strategic priorities and collaborating within the university and across the University of Minnesota to ensure inclusive support structures for all students to thrive while on campus and beyond.

Robinson’s appointment takes effect July 7, 2025.
