UMD Welcomes New Students to Campus

The city of Duluth will see a growth in college-students in late August as UMD students return to town. 

David McMillan, UMD’s new interim chancellor says, “I am thrilled to experience my first semester and meet our new students and their families during move-in week. The energy during the start of the semester brings life back to campus and we are here to do our very best to support each student through their academic journey.” 

Important Dates: 

  • New Student Move-In Days – Wednesday and Thursday, August 24 - 25, 2022
  • Bulldog Welcome Week – Wednesday, August 24 - Sunday, August 28, 2022
  • First Day of Class – Monday, August 29, 2022

New Student Move-in Days – August 24 - 25, 2022

This year's move-in process will take place over two days between 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24 and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 25. Most of the events will take place in front of Lake Superior Hall and Griggs Hall, 508 Niagara Court. Around 2,000 new students are scheduled to move-in during this time.

UMD’s Director of Housing and Residence Life, Jeremy Leiferman says, “We are looking forward to welcoming new students to our on-campus residence halls this week. Our staff, including a talented team of student workers, plan and prepare for months in advance and it is always exciting when the day finally arrives.”

Director of Housing and Residence Life, Jeremy Leiferman will be available for media interviews at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 24, 2022 during move-in outside of Lake Superior Hall.

At the Bulldog Bash students will play a series of games to network and get to know their peers.

Interim Chancellor McMillan and student leaders will address the new students and welcome them to UMD.

About the 2022-23 School Year

Residence Halls News:

UMD is launching a World Languages & Cultures Living-Learning Community (LLC) in partnership with the College of Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences. There are already two other LLCs: a floor for Honors students and BizDawgs (business and economics students.) UMD will welcome around 2,000 new students to campus this year. Official enrollment numbers are available a couple of weeks after the start of the school year. 

New Academic Programs for 2022-23 

New post-baccalaureate certificate programs will be offered in the American Indian Studies department. They include: 1. Indigenous Environmental Systems and Principles of Resource Management; 2. Tribal Administration and Leadership; 3. Tribal Sovereignty and Federal Indian Law; and 4.Tribal Natural Resource Stewardship, Economics, and Law.

Safety

While the campus continues to closely watch COVID and public health information, this school year will have less COVID restrictions. Members of the campus community are still encouraged to take preventative measures such as getting vaccinated and boosted, testing when they are sick, and following health and safety measures. 

Logistics

Note: Due to construction on 21st Ave East, UMD has worked with the City of Duluth to develop alternative traffic routes for move-in this year.
