When did you start at UMD? Why did you choose to work at UMD?
After completing my undergrad at UMD in 1996, I taught at Western Michigan University and a private K-8 school in Kalamazoo, Michigan. When my husband and I moved back to Duluth, the HPER (now AHS) department needed an instructor to teach a couple of physical education activity courses. I jumped at the opportunity and began my teaching career at UMD in 1999. I earned my Master of Education in 2007, to expand my teaching opportunities in the physical education teacher education program. I think it is safe to say I am a Bulldog through and through, as I celebrate 25 years of working at UMD.
What do you like most about your job?
Working with the students is always the greatest gift each day. I love the energy, creativity, knowledge and personalities they bring to every class. I am also lucky to be a part of a department and campus filled with colleagues who are wonderful mentors and friends.
What is your research and/or teaching focus?
I teach a variety of courses for the PETE, HPE and DAPE majors/minors, in addition to various physical activity courses in the Department of Applied Human Sciences. Understanding and applying quality physical, health and DAPE education in all its realms as well as the need, value and impact it has in the K-12 setting is an area I'm particularly passionate about.
Do you have any advice for students?
Find your joy in everything you do and share that joy with all you encounter. You make each day what it is, make it great! Also, give yourself grace. The path you take may have roadblocks or detours. Find the alternate route and make it happen each and every time.
