When did you start at UMD? Why did you choose to work at UMD?
I started as an instructor at UMD in 2002. Before working here, I got my elementary teaching certification and my M.Ed. at UMD. After being a classroom teacher and environmental educator in Duluth, I got an opportunity to supervise student teachers at UMD and have been here ever since.
What do you like most about your job?
I get to see my students progress through the methods courses as sophomores and juniors and then get to supervise them in student teaching. This allows me to see them progress and become effective teachers.
What is your research or teaching focus?
I currently teach courses and supervise student teachers in the Integrated Elementary & Special Education (IESE) program. I have also taught in the early childhood and secondary programs throughout the years. I recently took on the administrative role of associate department head in the Department of Education.
Do you have any advice for students?
First, get to know your elementary students and build rapport with them. Continue to pursue your teaching style and voice to grow as an educator and never stop learning.
