Building on a record of recent accolades, the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) has retained its strong position in the 2025 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings. The U of M’s consistent placement among America’s leading universities illustrates the hard work and successes of faculty and staff to live out the University’s mission of providing world-class education, advancing research innovation and discovery, and collaborating with communities throughout Minnesota and beyond.
“The latest U.S. News & World Report rankings are a direct reflection of the extraordinary momentum we are building across the University of Minnesota system,” said University President Rebecca Cunningham. “These rankings help illustrate our unwavering commitment to providing students across our state, nation and world with an affordable, world-class education that can transform their lives. And they also exemplify our drive and determination to generate new knowledge, address global challenges, design new technologies and enhance quality of life for people right here in Minnesota and beyond.”
Since last year’s results were shared, UMD has moved up to No. 20 in the Regional Universities (Midwest), continuing its strong climb of the past 3 years. Within that category, UMD also attained No. 4 in Top Public Schools, making it the highest ranked midsize public university within the state of Minnesota.

UMD was also named No. 38 in Best Value Universities, No. 8 in Best Colleges for Veterans and was recognized for the long-term economic impact of its degree as a Top Performer on Social Mobility (88), among regional universities in the Midwest.
Additionally, a number of programs on the Duluth campus were singled out for excellence within their fields, such as Best Undergraduate Business (198), Best Undergraduate Computer Science (256), Best Undergraduate Engineering (44), and Best Undergraduate Psychology (322). Earlier this year, UMD earned top spots from the U.S. News & World Report for some of its graduate programs as well.
