UMD recognized for excellence in student voter registration and turnout

ALL IN Awards Day honored UMD for excellence in nonpartisan student voter engagement and campus turnout in the 2022 Midterm Elections.

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) has recognized the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) for its nonpartisan democratic engagement efforts that fostered high levels of student voter engagement in the 2022 midterm elections. UMD earned a Gold Seal from the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) based on the 2022 campus voting rate from UMD’s National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) report from Tufts University. This is a reflection of UMD’s commitment to ensuring that nonpartisan democratic engagement is a defining feature of campus life.

UMD's Gold Badge from ALL IN for 2022

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge empowers colleges and universities to achieve excellence in nonpartisan student democratic engagement. UMD was recognized alongside more than 500 campuses using data from the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) out of Tufts University, which found that colleges and universities had the second-highest voter turnout among students in a midterm election since NSLVE began measuring this data. The full list of campus award winners can be viewed online.

“We’re proud to have retained our gold ranking for the 2022 election, and are working toward even greater participation in the upcoming 2024 elections,” said Jeremy Leiferman, campus vote coordinator and interim vice chancellor & dean of students at UMD. “Our efforts around voter engagement are organized through a campus coalition of students, staff, and community partners, all working to increase voter engagement on campus.”

  • In the past eight years, UMD has earned badge-eligible ratings in the 2016 Presidential Election, 2018 Midterm Election, 2020 Presidential Election, Presidential Commitment Signatory badge, and the 2022 Midterm Election

“The ALL IN Awards were created to celebrate nonpartisan democratic engagement and the outstanding campus voter registration and turnout rates achieved by our ALL IN campuses. Ahead of the 2024 elections, ALL IN campuses are ready to build on the momentum from 2022 to ensure their communities are ready to make an even bigger impact this fall,” said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. “ALL IN is proud to celebrate and honor top-performing campuses, like UMD, who demonstrate that nonpartisan student voter engagement is possible and effective.”

UMD’s campus coalition collaborates with the other campuses within the University of Minnesota System and throughout the state through efforts coordinated by the MN Secretary of State's office.

“New laws passed by the state legislature will provide additional opportunities for us to engage with our campus community around voter registration and turnout,” said Leiferman. “Between that and the general elections, it’s going to be an exciting and engaging fall semester.”

More than 1,060 institutions enrolling more than 10 million students participate in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, which supports colleges and universities in achieving excellence in nonpartisan student voter engagement. Campuses can join ALL IN through their website
