Twin Ports Veterans Day Vigil 2024

Cadets stand guard for 24 hours on the UMD campus in recognition of service and sacrifice.

As Veterans Day approaches, 50 cadets from Air Force ROTC are preparing to stand guard at the flagpole outside of the University of Minnesota Duluth’s (UMD) Darland Administration Building. Two at a time, cadets will take turns in 30-minute shifts, silently standing guard around the clock from midnight to midnight throughout Veterans Day on November 11.

What: 24-Hour Veterans Day Vigil
When: Monday, November 11, from 00:01 am - 11:59 pm
Where: Darland Administration Building, 1049 University Drive, Duluth, MN

This vigil occurs every year rain, snow, or shine and is wholly planned and executed by students from UMD, the College of St. Scholastica (CSS), and the University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS) participating in the Air Force ROTC program hosted at UMD. Students standing guard reflect on what it means to serve, and their presence stands as a reminder to the community of the freedoms we enjoy thanks to our veterans’ service and sacrifice.

About AFROTC
The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) provides the opportunity for men and women to learn about the United States Air Force while pursuing an undergraduate degree. The AFROTC curriculum is a university-based leadership development program designed to prepare students for challenging and rewarding careers as officers in today's high-tech United States Air Force. Upon completion of AFROTC and a degree program, students receive a commission into the United States Air Force. The AFROTC detachment is located on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth; however, the detachment has longstanding crosstown agreements with the University of Wisconsin-Superior, College of St. Scholastica, and Lake Superior College so their students may participate in AFROTC.
